Life doesn't stop just because law school starts. And so it's really important to remember that you don't have to shut down everything else, and that there are people here who are ready to kind of support you through those, those big life events. So, we have our Student Success Program. So, these are workshops that are really available to all students, where we talk through the basics of law school. So, it's how to do law school, how to brief a case, how to outline for class, how to write a typical exam. And then ASP, our Academic Success Program, is more tailored to actually applying those larger foundational concepts to a specific course with a specific professor.
The faculty and the academic staff here at Marquette truly understand that people come from different backgrounds and try to give this support on an individualized basis. I'm married and was working for six years prior to law school, and they work with you to come up with a balance of not that you're just spending all of your time at the law school, but that you're maintaining your relationships throughout your life--your friends, your family--they realize that all of those things are equally important to what makes us who we are, and why we got into law school in the first place, and why they took a chance on us. And they understand that those things continue to define us, even when we become law students, and eventually attorneys, as well.
I think the biggest tip I would give prospective students is just be yourself. Everyone's going to ride their own wave. Everyone has their own journey, but you want to make sure that you, at the end of the day, are happy, and if you are yourself, you're going to succeed however that looks like to you.
